Chalcedony is derived from the name of an ancient Greek town in Asia Minor known as Chalkedon.

Except for sticks, bones, rocks, and animals skins, Chalcedony is believed to be the earliest raw material used by man kind. The earliest recorded used of Chalcedony was for weapons, tools, knives, bowls and cups.

The Chalcedony rings worn by ancient Romans are still in remarkably good shape today.
